"Bacteria from the mouth can be carried through the bloodstream to internal organs and can be linked to serious and costly health conditions."

The Importance of Dental Care for Pets

Dental care is crucial for your pet's health. Regular check-ups can prevent various dental issues. Here are some reasons why dental care matters:

Prevents Pain & Infection

Gum disease leads to painful infections, tooth loss, and difficulty eating.

Reduced Need for Extractions

Regular care decreases the need for lengthy dental surgeries to extract infected or painful teeth.

Protects Overall Health

Untreated dental problems can lead to serious issues like heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Eliminates Bad Breath

Persistent bad breath is often a sign of dental problems, making regular care essential.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Studies conducted in 2019 and 2022 have established a significant link between periodontal disease in pets and systemic health problems. These issues particularly affect the heart and liver. Small breeds and older dogs are more susceptible to periodontal disease. Treatment of periodontal infections can mitigate these impacts. This highlights the importance of maintaining your pet’s oral hygiene to prevent not only dental issues but also potential widespread health problems.

What to Look for During a Dental Exam

During a dental exam, specific issues can be identified, including:

🪥 Gingivitis

This condition inflames the gums. Regular dental care can help.

🪥 Tartar Buildup

A buildup of tartar can lead to dental disease if not managed.

🪥 Calculus Formation

This hardened plaque can trap more bacteria.

🪥 Fractures

Tooth fractures may result from chewing hard items, leading to pain.

🪥 Infection

Signs of infection can manifest as swelling or redness in the gums.

🪥 Resorptive Lesions

These are painful conditions that can affect your pet’s teeth.

Tips for Maintaining Your Pet’s Dental Health

Keeping your pet’s mouth healthy requires consistent effort. Here are some tips:

🪥 Daily Brushing

Brushing your pet's teeth daily can be a game-changer. Use pet-safe toothpaste.

🦴 Dental Chews & Toys

These can naturally reduce plaque buildup. Look for products designed for dental health.

🍗 Healthy Diet

Feeding special dental diets and kibble can support oral hygiene.

🩺 Regular Vet Checkups

Schedule professional cleanings to prevent disease. This step is vital for maintaining dental health.

Managing Advanced Dental Disease in the Clinic

In cases where dental disease has progressed significantly, at-home care may not be sufficient. We provide in-clinic treatments to remove hardened deposits that can hide signs of decay.

At Pawvet, we perform thorough cleanings under general anesthesia. This allows us to use a specialist ultrasonic scaler effectively. We clean teeth above and below the gumline and examine the mouth for any signs of disease. After cleaning, we polish the teeth using pet-friendly products to ensure a clean and fresh breath.

The Risks of Non-Anesthetic Dental Procedures

Some establishments offer scaling and polishing without anesthesia. However, this method is not recommended. Without anesthesia, it is impossible to adequately access all surfaces of the teeth or clean below the gumline. Although these procedures may offer temporary improvements in appearance, they do not effectively treat underlying dental diseases. Consequently, the condition may worsen, leading to pain and infection.

Dental Awareness Month Offer

In celebration of Dental Awareness Month, we are excited to offer all Pawvet clients free dental check-ups throughout February. Our experienced nursing team will provide this service. Additionally, we are deducting $50 from all dental treatments and X-rays.
